Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA), also known as male pattern baldness, is a progressive type of hair loss characterized by the gradual thinning and shortening of hair, eventually leading to noticeable baldness. The main causes are attributed to the effects of male hormones—particularly dihydrotestosterone (DHT)—and genetic factors. Hair usually becomes softer and thinner, especially from the front hairline through to the crown of the scalp.
There are individual differences in how AGA progresses. Some people experience a receding “M-shaped” hairline, others notice thinning starting from the crown, or both patterns may progress simultaneously. While many believe these symptoms only occur with age, signs of thinning can appear as early as the teenage years or early twenties, and there is significant variability in the onset and speed of progression.
Common early symptoms include increased hair shedding, difficulty styling hair, and a receding hairline. Recognizing these early signs is key to taking prompt action.
